Sunday 4th June - Club Championship Final

Bearing an uncanny resemblance to  last year’s final the 2017 version saw a 3 hole margin at the end of the morning round, but this time it was Danny Head who was 3 down to Nicol Auld. The similarity did not end there however as by the the turn of the afternoon round Danny had clawed the deficit back and the game was all square on the 12th tee. From there Danny boomed a magnificent drive over the hill only to find a poor lie just beyond and left of the green. Playing his second shot from 20 yards short of the green Nicol elected to use his putter which he struck straight and true to hole out for a 2 and take him 1 up. It stayed that way until the par three 17th where, neither player having found the green, Danny managed a fine up and down to level the match and ensure a grandstand finish for the many spectators who were thoroughly enjoying the tussle. Both drove well from the 18th tee and Danny found the green with his second. Nicol’s second having pulled up just short, he again elected to putt but this time mis-cued leaving a nasty downhiller that slid agonisingly past. Danny’s first putt pulled up short and Nicol holed out leaving Danny with a tricky downhiller for the championship. It too slid past and it was all up the 1st again for a nerve jangling playoff.

Danny’s tee shot ended within a few feet of the green with Nicol a few yards further back. Nicol played a fine pitch to the green but he needed a further two putts to secure his par. Danny was able to get down in only two more shots to secure the match and the championship, fittingly with a birdie 3.

The match was played in the finest traditions of the game and both players are to be congratulated and thanked for the many examples of good humour and sportsmanship on show. Nicol took his disppointment well and was, as one would expect, the first to congratulate Danny on his first club championship after two successive runner’s up spots. Well played Danny and many congratulations - it is sure to be the first of many.
